JAMMU, June 19: Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Prime Minister, L K Advani has cancelled his proposed visit to Jammu on June 23 to address a function being organised by Pt Prem Nath Dogra Memorial Trust in connection with observance of Martyrdom Day of founder president of Bharatiya Jana Sangh Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee.
Confirming that Mr Advani has cancelled his proposed visit to Jammu on June 23,Brig (retd) Suchit Singh, a senior member of the Trust, said that BJP leader’s visit to Jammu was clashing with his other functions in Union Capital and hence he cancelled it.
It may be recalled that on the same day chairman BJP’s Election Campaign Committee (ECC) and Chief Minister Gujarat Narendra Modi is scheduled to address a public rally at Madhopur Punjab.
Mr Advani earlier was scheduled to release a book written by a well known scholar Dr Agnihotri on 1952-53 Praja Parishad Movement during the function to be organised by the Trust in Jammu Club here.
PTI adds from New Delhi that Mr Advani putt off his proposed meeting which was scheduled to be held today with RSS chief Dr Mohan Rao Bhagwat by a day as he was indisposed.
Sources close to Advani said that all his engagements for the day have been cancelled. He will now have a meeting with Dr Bhagwat tomorrow, the sources said.
Advani also skipped a public meeting on Ganga river issue organised by BJP vice president Uma Bharati.
Tomorrow’s meeting between Advani and Bhagwat will be the first personal interaction between them after the BJP leader withdrew his resignation from all party posts on June 11 at the behest of the RSS chief.
Advani was unhappy with the elevation of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as head of the BJP Election Campaign Committee which was announced at the Goa conclave on June 9.
In his resignation letter, Advani had lamented that some leaders were only interested in their “personal agendas” and that this was no longer the party its ideolgues like Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Deen Dayal Upadhyay and Atal Bihari Vajpayee had ardently worked for.
Modi met Advani yesterday in an apparent bid to mollify him after the bitter acrimony over his elevation.
Meanwhile, former BJP chief Nitin Gadkari met Bhagwat at the RSS office here.
BJP President Rajnath Singh and other leaders are also likely to meet Bhagwat.
