KATHUA, Sept 5: The academic arrangement faculty comprising lecturers, teachers and teaching assistants of Government Degree College Kathua held a protest demonstration here, today against the recent Government policy enunciated by Order No 472HE dated 23rd of August 2019 of Higher Education Department by virtue of which the designation of lecturers and teaching assistants has been changed to need based teachers.
The protestors, while terming the new order as shocking and discriminatory alleged that it envisages giving salary on hourly basis and the number of lectures delivered instead of fixed monthly amount of Rs 28,000 which was earlier given. That means on holidays or non working days or when the syllabus has been completed the lecturers will be rendered jobless.
Earlier they were employed for the whole academic session but now like same unskilled workers they will be engaged on need basis that’s why the designation need based teachers has been given to them.
Against this backdrop they went on pen down strike for one day on September 4 and today on Teachers’ Day they held a demonstration and Celebrated it as a Black Day.
The protestors said that at the time when Article 370 was abrogated, the youth of J&K were expecting some fruitful results but the order shows that the Government is rendering the teaching community unemployed for a major part of the year.
