About 100 students detained, many injured as cops batoncharge ABVP protesters

JAMMU, Oct 12: Police today batoncharged student protesters, agitating under the banner of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Jammu, leaving many of them injured and taking another 100 in custody.
A handout of ABVP claimed that cops also roughed up some girl students and took the arrested activists to different police stations of the city.
The protesters had gathered outside Civil Secretariat Jammu and were raising slogans against Principal Secretary Higher Education.
“We were protesting in a democratic manner and the police action on unarmed protesters is condemnable,” a protester told reporters.
The handout of ABVP stated that the protest was staged to press the authorities for the demands of students which include increase in intake capacity of all the affliated colleges of Cluster University of Jammu (CUoJ) and increase in number of seats in under graduate general courses.
More demands included fee-refund to all the rejected forms of 1st semester students seeking admission in CUoJ.

The protesters were also demanding developing of infrastructure in all the newly sanctioned degree colleges affliated to Jammu University and all streams to be introduced in these colleges.
Their another demand was empowering the Principals of Colleges under CUoJ regarding admission and intake capacity of students.
Talking to reporters ABVP J&K Secretary, Mukesh Manhas claimed that universities are playing with the future of students.
He said, with the passage of time universities increase their infrastructure, intake capacity and seats but CUoJ is decreasing the seats day-by-day.
He said, the students are protesting for the last one week and have also submitted memorandums of demands to CUoJ Vice Chancellor and Deputy Commissioner Jammu but no response came.
Manhas further informed that ABVP will continue the protest till the demands are conceded.
Nandita Sharma, ABVP J&K Joint Secretary said, from last three years CUJ is decreasing seats due to which the students suffer and fail to get admission.
