A social document of Mirpur Mahajan families

The Directory of Mirpur Mahajan families settled in Jammu, is well planned, well designed and well organized a social document of the said community. In fact it is a most valuable necklace in which members of the community, have been arranged family-wise and tied together which ultimately forms a bouquet in which all the presently living persons of the Mirpur Mahajan Community settled in Jammu, have been interwoven family-wise and placed age-wise in each respective family setup. The document also includes even newly born children of one day and even the bed-ridden old persons as on January 1, 2010. Such a complete social document is rarely found in the country. Because of its extremely social importance, this document is being kept by each family as a Bible of the community.
The face of the Directory contains a memorable scene of an old Shiva temple raised more than 600 years ago at Mirpur which at present, is the only visible sign of Mirpur city which was the erstwhile District Headquarters of Jammu province of the Jammu and Kashmir State and fell to the hands of raiders on 25th November, 1947 on which dreadful occasion more than 18000 citizens of Mirpur which included men, women and innocent children were killed in one day while they were fighting to protect their mother land of Mirpur from the Pakistani raiders. The rest of the immoveable property of Mirpur city stands submerged in water because of construction of Mangla Dam there by the Government of Pakistan in late sixties. The photograph of the aforesaid temple was taken by Sunil Sethi Senior Advocate in High Court of Jammu and Kashmir State when he visited Pakistan as a member of Good-Will-Mission Delegation from India.
Since the present structure of the community is the off-shoot of the martyrs dedicated the said social document to martyrs of Mirpur of 1947.
As per the Directory, 1614 Mirpur Mahajan families have been presently residing in Jammu covering the whole area right from Nagrota to Bari-Brahmna. The most significant feature of the Directory is that its Index prepared alphabetically runs into 41 pages. In order to locate the family particulars of any family, only the name of the married person and his father’s name in the case of male and her husband’s name in the case of widow, is needed and the Index will give the FIN (Family Index Number). By opening the relevant Family Index Number in the Directory, all the family particulars of that family can be seen at a glance.
The sample copy of “Family Index No. 1 shown here in the right margin indicates that Chander Prakash Gupta is the head of his family. At present his age is 76 years (2012-1936). He is a business man. His father’s name is Hans Raj Gupta. His residential address is 51 Bakshi Nagar Jammu. His land line No. is 2580697 and his mobile No. is 9419143523. The name of his wife is Urmal Gupta whose age is 67 years (2012-1945). FIN No. 267 indicates that Urmal Gupta is daughter of Ved Rani Gupta Wife of Late Shri Roshan Lal Gupta. Further Chander Prakash Gupta has two daughters and two sons. All are married. Elder daughter Anu of the age 41 years (2012-1971) is married to Lalit Kohli and the younger daughter Aushu Gupta of age 37 years (2012-1975) is married to Atul Arora. The sub families of the two sons Abhinav Gupta of the age of 36 years (2012-1976) and Anubhav Gupta of the age of 35 years (2012-1977) along with other family particulars are shown in FIN 1:1 and 1:2 respectively, according to which Abhinav Gupta was married to Parerna Gupta daughter of Sohan Lal Tandon and Anubhav Gupta to Aanchal Gupta daughter of Ashok Amla. Further Anubhav Gupta has one son Aradhan Gupta whose at present age is over four years (2012-2008). We have yet to see such a complete social document of any other community in the country. Another important feature of the Directory is that in sweet memory of deceased persons of the community, many persons having close relations with the said deceased persons, gave their Memorial Notes along with the photographs of the deceased persons for everlasting record of memory which stand displayed at appropriate places in the Directory.
The photographs of all the members of the Working Committee of Mirpur Mahajan Sabha for the years 2009 and 2010 displayed in the Directory add extra glory to this document. The camera clicks depicting the scenes of Prabhat Pheri while marching towards Mirpur Shaheedi Samark at Maheshpura Chowk Bakshi Nagar Jammu on 25th November, 2009 (Mirpur Fall Day) for paying rich tributes to the martyrs of Mirpur also form an attractive part of the Directory.

Bakshi I.A.S the then Additional Commissioner Jammu, Dinesh Gupta the then Municipal Corporator Ward No. 18 of Jammu, Acharya Vidya Bhanu a renowned Pandit in Jammu and Surinder Singh Shingari the then Muncipal Corporator Ward No. 27 of Jammu, after a detailed scrutiny of many Directories of other social organizations placed before them, gave its joint verdict that the Directory of Mirpur Mahajan families settled in Jammu, is a unique and unparalleled social document. In fact it is the best guideline for the new authors and scholars who intend to prepare family Directories of their respective communities. There is a heavy demand from various scholars, social organizations and Mirpuri Mahajans residing all over the country and even in foreign countries for a copy of this Directory for their reference and record. This speaks the value and importance of this social document.
