Finally the Narmada valley project started functioning from 17 Sept. 2017. It was a dream envisioned in the eyes of Vallabhai Patel which took decades to accomplish. Mr Nehru led the foundation in 1961 but there were so manny obstacles to overcome from the height of dam to salinisation, environment threat, to the uprooting of people near dam.Lots of NGOs like NBA (Narmada Bachao Andolan of Medha Patkar to socialist like Baba Amte raised their voices against the project that even the world bank too had to push itself back in financing aid to it in 1994.There were cases in Supreme court to (1999, 2000, 2003) finally in verdict 2014 altering its height to 163m from 80 m.
No doubt the major reasons of its approval was the winning weight of its pros over cons.It will provide irrigation to 17920 sq km of barren land, feed as many as 20 to 30 million people ( drinking ,sanitation and various other household uses to commercial uses.)
