Leh, Aug, 2: Ladakh is known for producing the Pashmina Pashmina in the world and today Pashmina gets the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) labelling mark during a release of Indian Standard on Identification, labeling and marking of Pashmina Production at CIBS Auditorium Hall Leh today.
Chief guest of the event Gyal P Wangyal, Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Leh, Surina Rajan, Director General, BIS and Dr. A. Sahoo, Director, Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute along with delegates from Handloom Weaver Co-operative Society, Pashmina Artisan, Manufacturers, Traders and Academic Institutes along with BIS officials participated in the release event. The event witnessed significant presence of manufactures and associations.
Dy Chairman Tsering Sandup, Executive Councillor (EC) Konchok Stanzin, EC Mumtaz Hussain, EC Phunchok Stanzin, Deputy Commissioner Avny Lavasa, Additional District Development Commissioner Moses Kunzang and other prominent personalities were present on the occasion.
Gyal P Wangyal, Chairman, LAHDC highlighted the fact that due to restricted availability and high prices, adulteration of Pashmina with low quality wool/ultrafine merino woolis a common practice. Due to this, common consumers are deprived of the genuine Pashmina products and artisans also do not get the fair price for their products. This has eventually hampered the growth and development of Pashmina trade. Considering this, the initiative taken by BIS is appreciable and will definitely uplift the Pashmina industry benefiting all stakeholders, he added.
Surina Rajan briefed the delegates that the specific issues of Pashmina Products can be addressed through standardization and conformity assessment of BIS which will result in improving the economic status of workers and artisans.
Dr. R K Bajaj, Deputy Director General, Standardi-zation, BIS while addressing the gathering stated that major concern today in the pashmina supply chain is its adulteration with super fine merino wool of similar fineness. This issue has been addressed by publication of an Indian Standard on the subject by BIS on fast track basis for the benefit of all stakeholders. This standard specifies testing methods for identification, labelling and marking of pashmina products by using physical, chemical, optical and DNA analysis and is applicable to raw fibre, sliver, yarn, dyed/processed fabrics and finished products, he stated.
