Soldier martyred, another wounded in south Kashmir encounter

SRINAGAR: A soldier was reportedly martyred and another was injured in an encounter during Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the woods in Tral area of south Kashmir district of Pulwama on Tuesday following firing early this morning, official sources said.
They said on a tip-off, Army, Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir and CRPF launched a CASO in the forest area of Lam in Tral in Pulwama district following a tip-off about the presence of militants.
However, when the security forces were moving ahead in the forest militants resorted to indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons in which two soldiers were injured.
One of the soldier reportedly succumbed, they said. There was no firing for the past some time from militant side, they said adding the militants might have escaped deep into forest.
However, Defence Ministry spokesman was not available for giving details about the operation.
Helicopters and drones were pressed into service to locate the militants, they said, adding the operation was still going on when the reports last came in. (AGENCIES)
