SRINAGAR, Nov 6: J&K Bank recovery team lead by the branch head of Air Cargo Business Unit had a narrow escape when one of the willful defaulters of the Bank, Mir Manzoor Gazanfar owner of Silver Star hotel, Haji Safdar Mir & Co and Tehran Motors tried to fire upon at his residence at Panderethan, Srinagar.
According to the reports, Mir Manzoor Gazanfar owes over Rs. 8 crore to the Bank which he had taken as loans from the Air Cargo business unit of the Bank some 10 years back. The recovery team of the Bank lead by Shabir Malik who is Branch Head of the Business Unit, reached to his home at 9 am today to remind him of the dues which he has not deliberately been paying to the Bank for the past 10 years. Despite repeated requests, the defaulter has been avoiding paying the money back to the Bank.
Instead of discussing the issue with the Bank’s recovery team, he took out a pistol and tried to fire upon the Bank personnel. But his wife and daughter in law forcibly snatched the pistol from him. The locals in the neighbourhood rescued the Bank team.
Later the Bank lodged an FIR under No. 118 with the Police Station Pantha Chowk. The accused was arrested and his pistol seized.
Meanwhile the civil society at large has condemned the criminal act of the hotel owner. “The society is not ready to accept such criminal acts against the bank and its personnel, as the bank has been on the forefront to support the people of the state in every sector,” said a senior civil society member. They have asked for severe action against the culprit so that other willful defaulters get a lesson and repay the money to the bank which they have blocked for the past so many years.
The management of the Bank in a statement has stated that this cowardly act of the willful defaulter cannot deter the Bank to go against the willful defaulters. “We strongly condemn this act”, reads the statement.
