MCD poll: Swaraj India promises to make Delhi garbage free

NEW DELHI: With around a week left for the election to the three Municipal Corporations  of Delhi, new entrant in the fray Swaraj India, led by Mr Yogendra Yadav, today released its poll manifesto ”Saaf Dil Saaf Dilli’, which promises to take up various burning issues including making Delhi garbage-free if voted to power.

Mr Yadav released the poll manifesto along with other leaders of the party at a press conference here.

On the occasion, the party chief said, “In the history of Indian politics, a party is fighting elections on environmental issues as others don’t. We don’t want to rake up the issues on who is corrupt like the other parties (BJP, AAP) do for their personal benefit. We are focussing only on how to make Delhi pollution free.”

In 2015, Centre formed laws for solid waste management but no Government across the country implemented them. Swaraj India will implement those laws if voted to power in the upcoming Civic polls and make Delhi garbage free, Mr Yadav asserted.

He also said on improving the quality of life for people of the city, the party has focussed on issues including making epidemic-free Delhi through stagnant water avoidance as it results in water and vector-borne epidemics, reduction of air pollution, improving quality of civic amenities and fiscal strength of municipalities, elimination of corruption in civic bodies, solution to parking problem, citizens participation and community decision making, and by enhancing pension for senior citizens and widows.

The Swaraj India chief said MCD employees have to be taken as partners in the mission to clean Delhi and for this purpose, they need to be properly equipped and trained.

Attacking  the BJP, Mr Yadav said, “BJP is making tall poll promises for civic elections. Who had stopped them from doing the same in  the last ten years ?”

Calling Aam Aadmi Party’s poll promise to abolish residential tax from MCDs ”irresponsible”, he said this  would affect the financial status of the Corporations.

The three Municipal Corporations in Delhi altogether have 272 seats — North and South Delhi Municipal Corporation has 104 seats each while East Delhi Municipal Corporation has 64.  Swaraj India has fielded 222 candidates.

The polling for the MCD is scheduled to be held on April 23. (AGENCIES)
