Srinagar, Dec 7: Parts of Kashmir today observed partial shutdown amid few incidents of stone-pelting against the alleged blasphemous remarks by a Hindu Mahasabha leader.
A Valley-based Barelvi cleric, Maulana Abdul Rasheed Dawoodi, who is patron of Tehreek-Sout-al-Awliya, had called for a shutdown against the alleged blasphemous remarks by Hindu Mahasaba National Working president Kamlesh Tiwari. The hardline Hurriyat faction general secretary and chairman of Democratic Freedom Party, Shabir Shah was the lone separatist who extended support to the call.
Shops and commercial establishments were closed in parts of South Kashmir’s Pulwama and Anatnag districts. Youth in these two districts pelted stones on private and public vehicles to enforce shutdown strictly. Besides, a protest demonstration was taken out in Pulwama Town against Tiwari and punishment was sought against him while mild clashes between police and protesters also erupted in the Town. A partial shutdown was observed in neighbouring Kulgam district.
In city here, there was no impact of the shutdown call and all the shops and commercial establishments opened as per routine in the morning while traffic also plied smoothly. However, some youths took to streets in Maisuma and pelted stones on security forces, resulting in panic and forcing shopkeepers to down their shutters. Reports of stone-pelting were also received from Narbal locality of city outskirts. A partial shutdown was observed in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
The impact of shutdown was near to zero in three north Kashmir districts. However, a partial shutdown was observed in Sopore Town of Baramulla district but situation remained peaceful.
