Sir,
The editors of all Print as well as electronic media, particularly of our J&K State, are requested not to highlight the names of the (innocent) parents, spouses and other family members of any accused arrested, booked or punished for his/her individual criminal act, as and when his/her news is highlighted, even if given as an ‘authentic press release’ by any public authority.
Although, a criminal and anti-social act of any individual may be highlighted for the general awareness of society for the public good (that too, provided it is true), but simultaneously a proper care and caution is required to be taken not to hurt or harm the feelings and personal reputation of his/her innocent family members (may be parents, spouse, children, brothers or sisters etc.). Otherwise for none of family members’ fault, they shall be forcibly degraded in the eyes of general public for the independent and individual act of accused, simply for the reason that they are his/her relations.
We must realize that the innocent family members have independent right to a dignified and reputed life in the society as per their own behavior, conduct and dealings. But, unfortunately, in practice, many a time it is seen that if and when any accused is arrested even for his/her independent and individual act, media gives his/her name, parentage, residence and lineage, whereas the name and residence is OK, but the mention of parentage and lineage, particularly of (late) parents is not justified and I hope our media persons may ponder over it to adopt some self regulatory norms and restraints.
Yours etc…..
