Sir,
This refers to the article ‘Curious case of School admissions'( D.E. dated 2-6 -15) by Lalit Anjum where in the author has very rightly deplored the criterion of schools’ management to give admission on the basis of marks scored by students in 10th class. This has given me a chance to share my views on this subject with your readers.
Getting high score in examination may be one factor of measuring ones intelligence but it cannot be the sole criterion for judging the hidden calibre of someone. We find many intelligent people in our society who could not get chance or were denied opportunity to go for higher studies and are thus leading an average life.We are not even in a position to quote like European society where many scientists, researchers, writers and artists got recognition in the latter period of their life despite their poor performance at school stage. Those societies understood such maladies and rectified the situation. As a result they got immensely benefited by those who were once dubbed as low achievers as mentioned by writer of the above quoted article.
This approach of setting bench mark by schools for admissions may be detrimental for some creative minds being ignored at this stage simply because of the reason;they could not get desired percentage in one final exam. But the question still remains what should be the option before schools when number of admission seekers far exceeds the intake capacity of the school. More over in this age of competition every institution would want bright students on their roll. And in the existing educational system an institution will always keep its interest uppermost rather than striving to help students to achieve their full potential. To my thinking the root of the problem is our education system itself which is mostly a legacy of British rule. This system does not equip the students to think independently and creatively and getting high score remains their only pursuit. This may be the reason that despite having high intelligent quotient we have not been good inventor, discoverer and thus could be proud of any remarkable contribution to the world.
Yours etc…
