J&K records 58 pc voting; Jharkhand 60 pc

SRINAGAR/RANCHI: Defying boycotts and terror threats, voters in Jammu & Kashmir and Jharkhand today came out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right in third phase polling of the five-leg Assembly elections.

Braving chill and defying threat perception, the voters in the border state, accounted 58 per cent polling in 16 assembly constituencies spread over Baramulla, Pulwama and Badgam districts.

Barring few minor incidents of stone pelting and a minor blast near a polling booth hours before the start of polling, the voting remained by and large peaceful.

A total of 13,69,102 voters, including 6,51,245 women, sealed the fate of 138 candidates, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah from Beerwah.

About 400 known trouble makers and former militants and supporters of boycott call were taken into preventive custody. Border constituency, Uri, witnessed highest 62 per cent voting till 1400 hrs.

Sopore, home town of hardliner Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, recorded 23.13 per cent polling.

Sources said after Uri, where the polling was 62 per cent, Charar-e-Sharief was second with 55.04 per cent followed by Khansahib 54.90 per cent, Gulmarg 54 per cent, Rafiabad 51 per cent, Chadoora 49.84 per cent.

Beerwah recorded 47.98 per cent, followed by Badgam 47.96 per cent, Pattan 47 per cent, Sangrama 45.64 per cent, Rajpora 40.25 per cent, Pampore 36.56 per cent, Baramulla 30.74 per cent and Pulwama 28.59 per cent. (AGENCIES)
