Srinagar, May 22: A doctor at District Hospital Pulwama sustained head injuries requiring eight stitches after he was allegedly assaulted by an attendant inside the hospital premises today, officials said.
The injured doctor, identified as Dr. Omar Khan, a medical officer posted at the hospital’s Outpatient Department (OPD), was immediately provided treatment following the incident.
A security guard was also injured during the altercation, officials said.
Officials said the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. after the attendant allegedly approached the doctor seeking examination of a patient.
According to officials, Dr. Khan had already worked nearly one-and-a-half hours beyond his scheduled duty time and advised the attendant to take the patient to the casualty wing, where four doctors were on duty.
“The doctor had already stayed beyond his duty hours. He informed the attendant that the patient could be examined in the casualty section, but the attendant became aggressive,” an official told Excelsior.
Officials said the attendant allegedly picked up a steel bench from the hospital corridor and hurled it at the doctor.
The iron portion of the bench struck Dr. Khan on the forehead, causing serious injuries.
Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Pulwama, Dr Abdul Gani Dar, told Excelsior that police have taken cognisance of the incident and recorded statements of witnesses.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
