Srinagar, May 16: Chief Spokesperson of the ruling National Conference (NC), Tanvir Sadiq, today said the Government would soon take a decision on imposing a ban on liquor in J&K, while accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of indulging in “drama” over protests against liquor sales.

Addressing reporters, Sadiq, who is also MLA Zadibal, said the liquor policy had been framed during the Lieutenant Governor’s administration in 2023 and questioned the BJP’s silence when the policy was introduced.
“When the policy on liquor licences was framed during LG’s rule, they were at the forefront. They should protest against those who framed the policy on liquor sales in 2023. At that time, they did nothing,” Sadiq said.
He asserted that the Omar Abdullah-led Government was sensitive to public sentiment, particularly in Kashmir, where there has been growing opposition to liquor sales.
“I promise that when a ban is imposed, it will be the National Conference that does it, and it will be done soon. We understand the people’s sentiment, especially in Kashmir. The Omar Government will review the matter and whatever is best will be done,” he said.
Sadiq also hit back at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over allegations of corruption against NC leaders and ministers.
Referring to the PDP’s previous tenure in Government, he alleged that a senior PDP leader in Anantnag had once faced accusations related to a “rate list” for Government jobs.
“They have been doing it themselves, and they must look inwards first,” Sadiq said.
He, however, maintained that the NC Government would take immediate action if any complaint of corruption surfaced against its ministers or legislators.
“If anyone has any complaint against any minister or MLA, bring it to the leadership and there will be immediate action. None of the ministers or MLAs is involved in any corruption,” he added.
