NC raising statehood issue to divert attention: BJP

Srinagar, May 6: Bharatiya Janata Party J&K today said restoration of statehood to J&K would take place “at the appropriate time” and accused the National Conference-led Government of using the issue to divert attention from its “failures” in governance and public service delivery.
The remarks by the party’s state spokesperson, Danish Bhat, came in response to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who had questioned whether the people of J&K were being “punished” for not electing a BJP chief minister amid the continued delay in restoration of statehood.
Reacting sharply to the statement, Bhat said the repeated focus on statehood had become “nothing more than an excuse” to conceal shortcomings in governance, unemployment, accountability and public services.
“Statehood will be restored at the appropriate time. What is truly punishing the people today is your Government’s failure to deliver on the promises made in your election manifesto,” Bhat said.
He alleged that the Government was attempting to reduce every issue to the statehood debate instead of addressing administrative and developmental concerns affecting people on the ground.
