Cong expresses concern over hike in LPG, transport fare

JAMMU, May 2: The Congress Party today expressed serious concern over the recent surge in prices of commercial LPG cylinders, accusing the Centre of mishandling the situation despite prior warnings from senior leader Rahul Gandhi.
Reacting to what it termed as one of the steepest increases in recent months, the party said both commercial and domestic LPG rates have been raised, contradicting earlier claims by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government about adequate energy management.
JKPCC Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Sharma voiced concern over the growing burden on the common people, stating that further hikes in domestic gas, petrol and diesel prices are likely after elections, citing past trends.
He said the poor and middle-class populations are already struggling under rising inflation.
Sharma added that Rahul Gandhi had earlier cautioned about possible increases in fuel and essential commodity prices post-elections, alleging that such decisions are often delayed to avoid electoral backlash.
He also criticised the Centre for failing to ensure adequate fuel reserves and alleged that policy decisions, including reduced purchases of cheaper fuel from Russia, were influenced by external pressures.
Additionally, Sharma expressed regret over the recent hike in transport fares in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that it has further strained household budgets in the region.
