Srinagar, Apr 18: Transporters across Kashmir today called for a valley-wide “chakka jam” on Monday to protest the expansion of Smart City bus services into districts, warning of a complete halt of public transport.

The call was issued by Shabir Ahmad Matta, president of the All J&K Transporters’ Welfare Association, who said the agitation was triggered by the Government’s plan to introduce 200 additional buses and extend services beyond Srinagar.
“A few days ago, Transport Minister said that 200 more Smart City buses are coming. We are against that. The buses already operating in Srinagar-we oppose them, and more should not be introduced,” Matta said.
He said the recent expansion of services to areas such as Pulwama, Kangan, Sopore and other areas had intensified concerns among transporters, who, he said, fear loss of livelihood.
“The Government should first work for the welfare of transporters. Where will they go when their families are suffering?” he said.
The association urged the public to make necessary arrangements in advance, cautioning that transport services across the Valley would remain suspended.
It also held the Government responsible for any inconvenience faced by commuters.
“The responsibility will lie with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah if people face difficulties,” Matta said, adding that the future course of action would be decided after the strike.
