RAMBAN, Mar 21: A truck driver lost his life after his vehicle plunged into a deep gorge in the Gujar Morh Digdol area of Ramban along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) on Saturday.
According to official sources, the truck (JK13D-4430) was on its way to Srinagar from Jammu carrying a consignment of fruit juice when it reportedly skidded off the road and fell into a gorge estimated to be nearly 900 meters deep.
Soon after the incident, a joint rescue and search operation was launched by teams of police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Army personnel and volunteers from Civil Quick Response Teams (QRT) of Ramban and Ramsu.
After several hours of strenuous efforts, the body of the driver was retrieved late in the afternoon.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ramban, Arun Gupta, personally supervised and monitored the rescue operation at the accident site.
The deceased has been identified as Hilal Ahmed (40), son of Gulam Qadir Laherwal, a resident of Ganderbal district.
His body was shifted to the mortuary of District Hospital Ramban and later handed over to his family for last rites.
Police have registered an FIR at Ramban Police Station under relevant sections of law and further investigation into the incident is underway.
