SRINAGAR, Mar 8: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has informed the J&K Students Association (JKSA) that Indian students in vulnerable areas of Iran are being relocated in a phased manner amid the evolving security situation, assuring that the Government is “leaving no stone unturned” to ensure their safety.
The assurance came during a meeting between Misri and JKSA National Convenor, Nasir Khuehami on Saturday evening on the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue 2026 in New Delhi. The meeting lasted for about 15 minutes, JKSA said.
During the interaction, Misri said the Government of India is closely coordinating with Iranian authorities and the Embassy of India in Tehran to closely monitor the situation and ensure the safety of Indian nationals, particularly students stranded in different parts of the country.
He informed Khuehami that relocation of students from vulnerable areas is being undertaken in phases depending on the evolving security situation on the ground.
“Our office has been receiving a lot of calls and I understand the concerns. We are leaving no stone unturned. So far, students have already been relocated from the worst-hit areas, including Tehran, to safer locations,” Misri said.
He reiterated that the safety and well-being of Indian students remain the government’s top priority and assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure their protection and facilitate their safe return to India.
Earlier, Khuehami raised serious concerns regarding the safety of Indian students, including a large number from J&K, who are currently stranded in Iran amid ongoing airstrikes and escalating hostilities.
He apprised the Foreign Secretary of the deteriorating security situation in Iran and the growing anxiety among Indian students and their families back home.
Khuehami said the Association has been receiving numerous phone calls and messages from distressed parents of Kashmiri students studying in cities such as Qom, Urmia, Arak and other parts of Iran.
The Association urged the Ministry to intervene and facilitate the immediate evacuation of Indian students from Iran, or alternatively arrange their relocation to safer locations until the situation stabilizes.
