Jammu, Feb 22: The District Magistrate Jammu, Rakesh Minhas, has issued a public notice directing all arms license holders in the district to strictly comply with the provisions of the Arms Act, restricting possession to a maximum of two firearms.
The notice states that under Section 3(2) of the Arms Act, 1959, as amended by the Arms (Amendment) Act, 2019, no person shall acquire, possess or carry more than two firearms. Further, Section 3(3) mandates that any person possessing more than two firearms at the commencement of the amendment must deposit the excess firearms within the prescribed period in accordance with law.
According to the order, scrutiny of official records has revealed that certain license holders in District Jammu are in possession of more than the permissible limit of two firearms. An indicative list of such license holders, based on available records, has been prepared and enclosed with the notice, subject to verification and correction.
Exercising powers under the Arms Act, 1959 and the Arms Rules, 2016, the District Magistrate has directed all license holders in possession of more than two firearms-including those named in the enclosed list-to produce their original arms licenses before the Judicial Section, Office of the District Magistrate, Jammu, within 10 days for verification and necessary action.
The order further directs such license holders to ensure compliance with the statutory limit and, in case of excess firearms, to deposit the same as per provisions of the Act and Rules under proper receipt and inform the Licensing Authority within the stipulated period.
The notice warns that failure to comply shall render the license holder liable to action under law, including proceedings under Section 17 of the Arms Act, 1959, without further notice.
