German Chancellor says negotiations on European Nuclear Deterrent are in early stages

BERLIN, Jan 30 : Negotiations on a European nuclear deterrent are ongoing, but are still in the early stages, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said.
The Chancellor recalled that Germany has committed to not having its own nuclear weapons in two international treaties that are binding under international law.
“This doesn’t mean we aren’t discussing joint nuclear deterrence with other European states. But these are negotiations that are in their early stages. And they don’t contradict the agreement with the United States on joint NATO nuclear missions,” Merz said on Thursday during a joint press conference with Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene.
He also emphasised that achieving a joint nuclear deterrent requires certain strategic and military-political decisions, but the time for that is not yet right.
