SRINAGAR, Jan 2: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) today wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking urgent intervention to ensure the safety, security of Indian students, particularly those from the Kashmir Valley, studying in Iran amid escalating unrest in the country.
In its letter, the association expressed grave concern over the deteriorating security situation in Iran, marked by widespread protests, violent crackdowns and reported killings in several regions, which, it said, has left hundreds of Indian students feeling “unsafe and vulnerable.”
National Convenor of JKSA, Nasir Khuehami, said nearly 2,000 Kashmiri students are currently enrolled in medical universities across different provinces of Iran, pursuing MBBS and other professional courses.
He said these students are largely dependent on local hostels, universities, public transport and essential services, making them particularly exposed during periods of political upheaval and civil unrest.
Khuehami said the prevailing situation has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, with students feeling stranded and helpless.
“JKSA has been receiving continuous distress calls from students and their families, who have raised serious concerns about restricted mobility, sporadic internet shutdowns, lack of timely safety advisories and the absence of visible contingency measures,” he said.
The association noted that the lack of real-time information and communication has intensified anxiety among parents in India.
Seeking immediate measures, JKSA urged the Prime Minister to direct the Ministry of External Affairs to establish round-the-clock communication channels between Indian students in Iran and the Indian Embassy in Tehran.
The Association called for regular outreach by embassy officials, activation of dedicated emergency helplines, clear and timely advisories, and uninterrupted communication to keep students informed and reassured.
Highlighting the unpredictability of the situation, JKSA also sought preparedness for a comprehensive evacuation plan.
