Power bills push Kashmir back to traditional heaters

SRINAGAR, Nov 20: While demand for traditional heaters has dipped across Kashmir in recent years, soaring operating costs of modern heating systems are driving many households back to the old-style heaters this winter.
Craftsmen at Maisuma’s lane-popularly known as Bhukhari Gali-told Excelsior that although the shift toward electric heating systems had earlier reduced demand, they are now witnessing a slow but noticeable change.
In the narrow lane known for its decades-old metalwork and handmade heaters, makers said the introduction of electric appliances and smart meters had sharply hit their market.
However, as per them, concerns over rising power bills are now prompting a modest revival.
“We have been doing this work for years, and people know this lane for the heater trade. Demand is not the same anymore,” said Feroz Ahmad, a craftsman with 40 years of experience.
“Electric heaters cost more to operate, while traditional heaters remain cheaper, easy to use, and free of materials that may cause harm.”
Makers said the decline in demand has directly affected these households.
“This work needs manual effort, and several people are involved in making a single unit. Earlier, we even supplied to Government offices and the security forces, but requirements have changed,” said Shoaib Alam Khan.
But with many consumers now wary of inflated electricity bills under smart meters, craftsmen say they are seeing old heating habits return.
“People are worried about high electricity costs, so many prefer these again. The Government should support locally made products,” Shoaib added.
