Srinagar, Oct 29: A delegation of the Jammu & Kashmir RTI Movement and J&K Climate Action Group (JKCAG) today urged the J&K Pollution Control Committee (JKPCC) to impose environmental compensation over unscientific waste disposal and illegal mining activities in parts of Pulwama and Budgam districts.
The delegation, led by RTI Movement Chairman and JKCAG Founder Dr. Raja Muzaffar Bhat, met JKPCC Chairperson Vasu Yadav here and submitted a memorandum highlighting environmental violations in Newa Pulwama and several areas of Budgam.
The memorandum thanked the JKPCC for acting promptly on a recent complaint that led to the halting of illegal riverbed mining in the Doodh Ganga stream at Karlwari and Borwah villages in Chadoora, Budgam.
“We hope environmental compensation will be imposed on the agency involved in illegal mining for three days. We also demand similar action against the Municipal Council Pulwama for unscientific waste dumping, burning, and burying,” the memorandum stated.
The delegation also urged the JKPCC to curb rampant sand and clay mining across the Karewas of Pulwama and Budgam.
“Illegal mining is causing large-scale environmental destruction, particularly air and dust pollution in Newa, Brarigund, Kultreh, Brinjan, Nowhar, Buzgoo, Nagam, Tangnad, Pallar, Shinpora, and other areas. The JKPCC must act swiftly against this mafia under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981,” the memorandum added, noting that the air quality index (AQI) in parts of Budgam remains poor.
