Kathua District NCORD Committee discusses anti-drug measures

KATHUA, Oct 29: Deputy Commissioner Kathua, Rajesh Sharma today chaired a meeting of the District Level Committee under the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) to discuss and review measures aimed at curbing drug abuse and the narcotics trade in the district.
The meeting held extensive deliberations on identification of areas of concern, and hotspots of drug abuse. The measures undertaken by the enforcement and social welfare agencies to combat the menace were also thoroughly reviewed.
The DC emphasized the need for a multi-pronged strategy including education, enforcement and awareness to effectively tackle the problem. He directed concerned departments to intensify awareness campaigns, particularly among youth and to share success stories of drug de-addiction to motivate others towards positive rehabilitation.
The Chief Education Officer was instructed to launch an extensive awareness campaign across schools through special sessions and morning assemblies to highlight the ill effects of drug abuse. Directions were issued to conduct similar awareness drives in colleges, tuition centers and rehabilitation centres for wider coverage.
The DC further directed the Excise and Taxation Officer to heighten alert to thwart any attempt of trafficking and smuggling across the district. The Assistant Controller Drugs and Food Control Organization was asked to closely monitor the sale of over-the-counter drugs and syringes having potential misuse for substance abuse.
He also stressed ensuring that awareness activities reach both urban and rural areas of the district, involving PRIs, youth clubs and community organizations for wider outreach.
Among others, SSP Kathua Mohita Sharma, ADC Kathua Vishavjeet Singh, SDM Hiranagar Phulail Singh, ACD Kathua, CMO, CEO, DSWO Kathua and officers from BSF and concerned departments were present in the meeting.
