SRINAGAR, Oct 28: The Jammu and Kashmir Government today announced that all trauma hospitals in the Jammu division are fully equipped to handle emergencies.
Responding to a question by MLA Arvind Gupta, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo said there are four trauma centres in Jammu province – Mahanpur (Kathua), Ramban, Thatri (Doda), and the newly sanctioned centre at Jajjar Kotli (Jammu).”These institutions are equipped to handle emergencies as and when they occur,” she said.
Facilities at these centres include minor operation theatres, general surgery, ENT care, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, physiotherapy, X-ray and ultrasound services, clinical labs, oxygen cylinders, pharmacies, and 24×7 ambulance services.
To strengthen emergency care in Government Medical Colleges (GMCs), the government has operationalised a 262-bed casualty block, 40 fully functional ICU beds, and deployed specialised doctors trained in critical care. ENT and dental specialists are also available around the clock to manage trauma cases.
A dedicated 12-bedded trauma ward with ICU facilities has been set up at GMC Udhampur. Trauma units are being upgraded at GMC Kathua and other associated hospitals with advanced life-saving equipment and infrastructure.
Itoo said there is no proposal to raise the retirement age of GMC faculty and clarified that referrals outside Jammu and Kashmir are made only in exceptional cases.
She added that private medical practice is allowed only beyond duty hours for doctors not receiving Non-Practising Allowance (NPA), and violations can lead to disciplinary action, including suspension of medical registration.
