JAMMU, Sept 5: Chairman J&K Sewa Samiti, Chander Mohan Sharma today said that unprecedented deluge due to heavy rains and flash floods have severely affected the Cremation Ground at Jogi Gate, here.
Talking to reporters, today along with other office bearers of the Samiti, Chander Mohan Sharma said the administration has extended its support for the removal of huge tons of mud deposits caused by the flood. This has rendered the cremation ground completely non-functional. Essential infrastructure, including electronic gadgets, furniture and fixtures has been washed away. While the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and the Deputy Commissioner’s Office have provided logistic support for debris clearance, but the restoration requires manual work at this stage, he added.
Sharma appealed to the Government to deploy Home Guards, NSS volunteers, and other support groups on a war footing basis. Similar measures be taken in trauma centers and emergency wards of hospitals.
He further appealed to the citizens of Jammu, civil society, NGOs, and religious bodies to come forward for Kar Sewa. The Cremation Ground must be treated with the utmost respect, as it has been the final resting place for human beings over a century. The premises of Cremation Ground must be regarded as Samadi of our elders.
The Samiti has also appealed to the public for free-will donations, which may be deposited directly in the account of J&K Sewa Samiti Account No: 0051040100000266, IFSC Code: JAKA0LINKRO Bank: J&K Bank either in person or through the QR Code.
Highlighting the widespread devastation across the Jammu region, Sharma emphasized that the Government of India and the UT Administration must ensure that flood-affected families are rehabilitated at safer locations. He urged the authorities to prevent illegal constructions and encroachments along the embankments and catchment areas of river Tawi, stressing that portion of land belonging to the Jogi Gate Cremation Ground have already been encroached by miscreants and should not be allowed to be re-grabbed.
