SRINAGAR, Aug 13: Senior Congress leader and its chief whip in the Legislative Assembly, Nizamudin Bhat, today said that his party, along with the ruling National Conference (NC), is moving in the same direction for the restoration of Statehood to J&K.
He further said that the Reorganisation Act-2019 has led to administrative inefficiency in J&K, leaving even the Chief Minister feeling “helpless” despite enjoying majority.
Speaking to reporters during the ongoing chain hunger strike at party headquarters, Bhat said the restoration of statehood is a collective cause for both alliance partners, and each is working in its own way.
“There is no need to take the NC into confidence. We are in an alliance, but we are not in the Government. However, there are common issues, such as Statehood,” he said.
“It is a collective cause – they are working in their way, and we are working in ours. From all ends, we are pressuring the Government,” he said.
Bhat said the NC-led Government passed a resolution in the Assembly, “but we had brought it already; the direction is the same.”
He added that since the CM is running a Government, there are “sensitivities,” and it is not true that the two parties are apart. “We are together, and it is absolutely not the case that we are on the same page.”
On whether the Congress party’s hunger strike will yield results, Bhat said that every protest has to reach its “logical conclusion,” especially in a democratic country like India.
“In a democratic country, when a campaign is carried out in a constitutional manner and when there are assurances from the Government, and if it is a recognised right, it has to be given – there is no question of not granting it,” he said.
