NOWSHERA, July 3: Jhangar Battalion today observed Jhangar Day with solemn tribute to Brigadier Mohammad Usman, MVC, on his death anniversary.
Brig Usman, known as the “Lion of Nowshera”, laid down his life in 1948 while defending Jhangar during the Indo-Pak War. His leadership in the Battle of Jhangar remains a defining moment in the defence of Jammu and Kashmir.
The event took place at the Usman Memorial, where Brigadier Shubhankar Ghoshal, SM, Commander of 8 Infantry Brigade, led the wreath-laying ceremony.
He was joined by Col Saurav Pandey, CO of Jhangar Battalion, and Col Subin Leons, CO of 3 Punjab Regiment. Local Bal Sainik Basant Singh also paid tribute to the fallen soldiers.
In his address, Brig Ghoshal hailed Brig Usman as a symbol of courage and national integrity, whose legacy continues to guide generations of Indian Army personnel.
A key highlight of the day was the launch of the official website-www.usmanmemorial.in-dedicated to Brig Usman’s life and service. The platform provides access to archival material, learning tools, and motivational resources to educate and inspire the public, especially the youth.
In the days leading up to Jhangar Day, the Battalion organised several outreach events, including a multi-specialty medical camp, a plantation drive, and children’s activities.
Relief kits, supported by Amazon India, were also distributed to locals affected by Operation Sindoor.
The commemoration ended with the felicitation of war awardees and a community interaction session over refreshments.
The day served as a reminder of the Indian Army’s enduring commitment to both national defence and social responsibility.
Pertinently, Brig Usman’s supreme sacrifice was posthumously awarded with Mahavir Chakra.
