Speaking to reporters on the ceasefire between Israel and Iran – as announced by US President Donald Trump – the PDP President said the US had “unwittingly” elevated Iran to a position of leadership in the Muslim world.
“We salute the people and leadership of Iran, because they were unarmed compared to what they were facing. They only had faith, and still brought the US and Israel down to their knees,” she said.
Mehbooba said Iran showed such courage that the US President had no option but to reach out to Qatar to persuade Iran to agree to a ceasefire.
“Trump talked to Qatar and told them that Israel was ready for a ceasefire, and asked them to persuade Iran for the same. As a Muslim, it is a matter of pride for us,” she said.
The former Chief Minister also praised China and Russia for “playing a good role,” while criticising Muslim countries for relying only on rhetoric.
“I would like Muslim countries to learn from Iran. Instead of helping Iran, they resorted to rhetoric. China and Russia played a good role, and we saw it,” she said.
Mehbooba added that while the US has attacked several countries in the Middle East, Iran gave it a tough time and, in doing so, elevated itself to a leadership position.
“The US unwittingly brought Iran to a place where it now stands as a leader for Muslim countries,” she said.
