The Meteorological Department in Srinagar this evening issued a fresh weather advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, forecasting moderate rain along with intense showers at a few places, accompanied by severe thunder, lightning, and gusty winds across the region.
The advisory, issued at 7:30 pm, warned that the weather is expected to remain harsh for the next 3 to 5 hours. The MeT department has urged people to stay away from streams, nallahas, landslide-prone areas, and loose structures, advising residents to remain indoors or in safe shelters.
“Travelers have also been cautioned to avoid venturing out unless necessary. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation”.
“The sudden change in weather has triggered concerns of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas, particularly in hilly and flood-prone regions.”
In the meantime, amid inclement weather conditions, the Government this evening decided to suspend class work in schools across Kashmir valley for tomorrow.
“In light of the continuing severe weather conditions and forecasts, it has been decided that classwork in all schools of the Valley shall remain suspended for one day tomorrow (21st April). This decision has been taken as a precautionary step to ensure the safety and well-being of all students,” Minister for Education, Social Welfare and Health and Medical Education, Sakeena Itoo, said in a post on ‘X’.
