Srinagar, June 17: The State Government has changed the name of an oldest locality of Srinagar in the revenue records leading to protest by the residents.
The Government in the revenue records has changed the name of Natipora to Mehjoor Nagar. They have appealed to the Financial Commissioner of the State to retain their locality’s original name.
The residents in a letter to the Commissioner have said the Natipora name was given to their locality by the revered saint Sheik-ul-Alam Sheik Nooru Din Noorani (RA) about 800 years ago.
“The revenue officials while making bandobast afresh have changed the nomenclature to Mehjoor Nagar for unknown reasons. Mehjoor Nagar name has been given to the paddy land of the residents of Natipora by the brokers who raised illegal colonies on it,” the residents said in the letter which has been signed by the Numberdar of the area.
