Internal autonomy real demand: Soz

SRINAGAR, Mar 5: The former Union Minister Prof Saifuddin Soz has said that the restoration of internal autonomy for the Jammu and Kashmir happens to be the real demand of the people here.
In a press statement here today Soz said that J&K political class has shown itself in poor light, recently in not responding to the onslaught by the Central Government on the genuine aspirations of the people of J&K in respect of its (J&K’s) internal autonomy, enjoyed by the people of the state for decades.
The state’s most popular leader Late Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah had supported the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India after he had got the assurance from the then Central Govt. that the accord on the J&K’s internal autonomy would be respected fully.
The Delhi Agreement of 1952 was adopted after the long negotiations between the Centre and the State.
Today’s BJP dispensation at the Centre would only create friction in the relations with the people of the J&K, rather unnecessarily.
The Central leadership of the BJP/RSS combine would be well advised to appreciate fully how a very cordial relationship was carved out between the people of J&K State and the Union of India after the Delhi Agreement was implemented in 1952.
Also, the J&K political class must fully appreciate that the restoration of the Statehood is not the basic demand of the people of J&K State for the simple reason that no power on the earth can reduce the statehood into a Union Territory. What we are facing today, happens to be a temporary situation.
The people of the J&K State must launch a strong movement for restoration of the internal autonomy enshrined in the now-abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution of India, Soz added.
