JAMMU, Feb 16: Social activist Jayesh Gupta has demanded a complete ban on liquor in J&K because of its adverse impact on younger generations.
Addressing a press conference here today, Gupta flayed the rapid proliferation of liquor shops near educational institutions and religious places over the past five years. He said that such establishments are unacceptable in J&K which is a region of holy sites like Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, Shri Amarnath Dham and Hazratbal Dargah.
“Our religious sentiments are being hurt by the unchecked sale of liquor and the city of temples has now become a hub of alcohol,” he maintained emphasising the need for unity among all political parties and civil society members to support the ban.
Gupta hailed the MLAs for introducing Private Bill on the issue and urged the BJP and Congress to back the Bill to ensure its unanimous passage in the Assembly.
He also appealed to CM Omar Abdullah to introduce and pass the Bill in the upcoming session and requested Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to grant his approval once the Bill is passed.
