JAMMU, May 8: Prof Dinesh Singh, Vice-Chairman of the Higher Education Council (HEC), Government of Jammu and Kashmir, underscored the significant potential of the “Design Your Degree” program to revolutionize education in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) during a meeting at the University of Jammu campus.
Attended by Alok Kumar, Principal Secretary Higher Education Department, Prof Umesh Rai, Vice-Chancellor University of Jammu, Prof Nilofer Khan, Vice-Chancellor University of Kashmir, Prof Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, VC IUST, Prof Akbar Masood, Vice-Chancellor, BGSBU, Prof Pragati Kumar, Vice-Chancellor SMVDU, Prof Kavi Arya, IIT Mumbai among other academicians, the meeting assessed readiness for the program’s implementation.
“This initiative represents a pivotal shift towards holistic learning and skill development,” stated Prof. Singh.
He emphasized that the program facilitates a diverse academic exploration within a four-year framework, allowing students to make informed decisions and achieve personal growth.
According to him, this approach not only spearheads academic innovation but also aligns perfectly with the core values of the National Education Policy, preparing students to adeptly navigate dynamic academic environments.
Prof Singh highlighted the initial success of the initiative at institutions like the University of Jammu and IUST, which have already implemented the program.
Deliberations at the meeting also focused on enhancing pedagogy and faculty readiness, revamping current approaches, and building capacity to broaden program awareness among students, parents, and faculty.
The Vice-Chancellors participating in the meeting shared updates and insights on the progress and challenges of integrating the “Design Your Degree” framework within their institutions.
Prof Singh proposed the formation of an Inter-Institutional Coordination Committee to foster monthly discussions and effective implementation of the National Education Policy, emphasizing the innovative aspects of the “Design Your Degree” program.
Each higher education institution in Jammu was encouraged to nominate two faculty members to this committee.
Addressing the broader implications of the program, Prof Singh suggested hosting a collaborative event with the Chamber of Commerce to discuss and promote the evolving educational landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, thereby enhancing public recognition and stakeholder engagement.
The gathering also touched upon the financial and administrative needs vital for the successful adoption of the National Education Policy and the seamless integration of the “Design Your Degree” program across educational institutions.
A forthcoming meeting chaired by the Lieutenant Governor of JKUT is expected to further discuss collaboration, awareness, and the effective rollout of these educational reforms.
