JAMMU, Mar 28: Ahead of culmination of the auspicious Navratras, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) in collaboration with NSS unit of Jammu University today began an active awareness campaign against immersion of holy `Saakh’ (seeding stock of barley) in Tawi river.
Holding placards in their hands, a number of NSS volunteers were seen standing on the Tawi bridge near Bikram Chowk and spreading message to keep the Tawi river pollution free.
Leading the volunteers on the spot, Mayor Jammu, Rajinder Sharma urged people to avoid `Saakh Visarjan’ ritual in Tawi and perform the same in flowing water of Ranbir canal.
The Mayor stressed upon adoring the holy river Tawi by not polluting its waters by throwing polythene bags in it and reiterated that let this good habit start from the auspicious Navratras itself.
Pertinent to mention that Mayor Rajinder Sharma had yesterday announced during a press conference that JMC in association with NSS volunteers of Jammu University would campaign to aware the devotees about harm of polluting Tawi water because of `Saakh’ immersion into the river.
The NSS volunteers remained stationed on the Tawi bridge from 9.30 am to 11 .30 am and they will continue their campaign till Navmi, the period when holy `Saakh’ is immersed in water.
