Mahant Rohit Shastri demands installation of Major Somnath Sharma’s statue

JAMMU, Mar 10:  Shri Kailakh Jyotish Avim Vedic Sanathan Trust president, Mahant Rohit Shastri paid a courtesy visit to the Mayor of Jammu, Rajinder Sharma and said that the Chowk on the fourth bridge connecting Bhagwati Nagar has been named after the first Paramveer Chakra winner Major Somnath Sharma. But the statue of Lord Shiva has been installed in the square. It is not a good thing to put the idol of God in the open. The idol of Lord Shiva should be installed in the temple and the worship of the idol should be done in the morning and evening, he added.
He demanded a statue of Major Somnath Sharma, the first Paramveer Chakra winner, should be installed in Somnath Chowk.
Mahant Rohit Shastri said that the nation can never forget the sacrifice of Major Somnath Sharma. He was born on January 31, 1923 in Himachal. He was the company-commander of Delta Company of the 4th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment of the Indian Army.
In the Indo-Pak conflict of October-November 1947, the martyr exhibited utmost valour bravery. Major Sharma attained martyrdom on 3 November 1947. The Government of India posthumously honored him with the Param Vir Chakra. He was the first military officer to get the Param Vir Chakra. This immortal glorification of his bravery must go to the masses so that there is competition in the coming generations to do something for the country and become a hero like Major Somnath Sharma.
He said today Kashmir is with India because of the martyrdom of Major Somnath Sharma.
Trust head Mahant Rohit Shastri wrote a letter to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, urging him to name the Srinagar Airport after the first Paramveer Chakra Awardee, Major Somnath Sharma. There was also a demand to declare January 31 as a holiday on the birth anniversary of Major.
Sukhijit Singh, Sanjeev Lamba, Rajesh Gupta, Tarsem Gupta, Munish Angurana etc were present on this occasion.
