Prof C Manoharachary delivers lecture at JU

JAMMU, Aug 12: Department of Botany, University of Jammu, in collaboration with Indian Botanical Society (IBS), organized Prof S N Chaturvedi Memorial Award Lecture, entitled “From biology to biotechnology” by Prof C Manoharachary, FNASc, FNAASc, NASI Platinum Jubilee Scientist from Department of Botany, Osmania University, Hyderabad, Telangana. The lecture was delivered in hybrid mode and offline mode.
Prof Manoharachary, while delivering his lecture, spoke on how biotechnology can be done only when biodiversity is available. He elaborated on the application of modern techniques like molecular sciences, DNA fingerprinting, etc in understanding the subject.
Prof Manoj K Dhar, Vice-Chancellor, JU, in his address, said that Prof S N Chaturvedi Memorial Award Lecture is the most relevant way to honour an eminent teacher and propagator of Botanical Sciences in the country. He acknowledged the holding of such an event to be a matter of great pride for University of Jammu.
Prof A K Koul, retired Professor of Botany, JU and an eminent botanist of the country having a very close association with late Prof S N Chaturvedi, also spoke on the occasion and apprised the audience about the latter’s working, teaching and leadership skills. He also elaborated on the declining nature of the hardcore Botany Syllabi in the country.
Prof Veenu Kaul, HoD Botany, JU, presented welcome address while Prof Yash Pal Sharma presented a vote of thanks and Dr Skarma Nonzom conducted the stage proceedings.
Others who attended the event, included Prof R K Rampal, Dean Life Sciences; Prof Anima Langer, Prof Geeta Sumbali, Prof Namrata Sharma, Dr Sikander, Dr Geeta, Dr Harpreet and Dr Uma from the Department of Botany, University of Jammu. All the fellows, life members and those of the Executive Council of IBS, notably Prof Dinesh K Maheshwari, President; Prof Seshu Lavania, Secretary; Prof Y Vimala, chief editor JIBS and other distinguished botanists like Prof A K Pandey, Vice-Chancellor, Global University, Bhopal; Prof Umesh Lavania; Prof Rajesh Tandon from Delhi University and others also joined the event through online mode.
