SRINAGAR Aug 6: The Peoples Conference will get shot in the arm as four former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders including two former MPs are likely to join the party tomorrow.
A party leader said that four former PDP leaders including two former Rajya Sabha members, Nazir Laway and Mir Mohammad Fayaz, are likely to join the Peoples Conference tomorrow at an event being organised at the Church Lane residence of party chairman Sajad Gani Lone.
Laway, who resigned from the PDP last week but was removed from the party two years ago would join along with his former party colleagues Mir Mohammad Fayaz, Safina Baig and former PDP leader and lawmaker Murtaza Khan.
Safina’s husband and former Deputy Chief Minister, Muzzafar Hussain Baig was disowned by the PC in June this year after the all party meeting with the Prime Minister in which Baig was reported to have told the meeting that he wasn’t a member of any political party.
Baig’s statement had landed the couple in trouble and PC was mulling to initiate a no-confidence motion against Safina in the District Development Council Baramulla which she heads with the PC support.
However, rapprochement with the party had saved Safina’s position in the Council.
Mir Mohammad Fayaz from Kupwara lost the 2014 Assembly polls to PC’s Bashir Ahmad Dar by a very thin margin. He completed his term on PDP’s mandate in the Upper House of Parliament earlier this year in February. Fayaz’s entry would further strengthen the PC in Kupwara.
Laway, who hails from south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, had also lost the 2014 Assembly polls to CPIM State Secretary Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami by a thin margin. The PDP had nominated Laway to the Parliament and he also completed his term in RS this year.
Advocate Murtaza Khan is a former PDP legislator and he resigned from the PDP and had not joined any party since then.
