8 kg heroin seized, 2 smugglers arrested

UDHAMPUR, June 21: In a major success, Udhampur Police seized eight kilogram heroin from two narcotic smugglers, who were on way from Kashmir to Jammu and being guided by their masters in Pakistan for further distribution of the consignment.
The consignment having market value of approximately Rs 40 crores, was being smuggled in a Tata Sumo vehicle, which was intercepted at Jakhani Chowk, Udhampur, during the intervening night of June 20-21.

Preliminary investigations and phone call details of the arrested accused hint that they were in touch with their masters in Pakistan, who had sent the consignment and were also guiding about the locations where the same was to be delivered.
Giving details during a hurriedly called press conference, here today, SSP Udhampur, Rajiv Pandey said that a police party, led by SHO Udhampur, Insp Vijay Singh Choudhary, under the supervision of Rohit Chadgal, DySP Hqrs Udhampur and Rajinder Singh Katoch, Addl SP Udhampur, laid a naka near Jakhani Chowk, NHW, Udhampur.
During naka checking, police party stopped one Tata Sumo, bearing registration number JK03A-6015 and recovered eight packets of heroin like substance, which were concealed in the vehicle. Police seized these packets and arrested driver as well as his associate, who were smuggling this consignment of narcotics from somewhere in Kashmir valley.
The arrested accused were identified as Siraj Ahmed, son of Gul Mohd and Javed Ahmed, son of Ab Kabir Shah, both residents of Qazigund, district Kulgam in Kashmir. In this connection, a case FIR number 290/2019, under section 8/21/22 NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Udhampur and further investigation of the case was taken up.
According to the SSP, Police is working on establishing forward and backward links, so that all those involved in the narcotic smuggling could be booked under law. “Phone call details of the arrested accused hint that they were also in touch with some persons across the border, which are believed to have sent the narcotic consignment here for its further distribution ,” he said and added that more details could be ascertained after further interrogation of the accused.
