SRINAGAR, Sept 28: Police today arrested 67 persons including a Special Police Officer (SPO) in Kashmir while normal life remained disrupted for 82nd day today due to curfew like restrictions in parts of Kashmir and shut down in Valley.
A Police spokesman said the situation across the Valley remained by and large peaceful today. “No untoward incident was reported from anywhere,” it said.
In Srinagar, three police station areas of Srinagar’s Old City – MR Gunj, Nowhatta and Khanyar -were placed under restrictions with hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel deployed on streets since morning. However, in other areas of Srinagar security forces were deployed in sensitive areas but there was civilian movement without any disruption in these areas.
In Civil Lines and uptown area of the Srinagar, movement of private transport and pedestrians was seen since early morning but shops, commercial establishments, educational institutes and most of the banks were closed. The security forces were deployed at sensitive areas in strength. However, shops opened in the evening and people were seen busy in shopping.
The train services between Banihal and Baramulla also remained disrupted for 82nd day today while pre-paid mobile services and mobile internet remained shut.
Police said: “during the day increased movement of traffic was observed in Srinagar city as also in main towns and on the inter-district roads and the shoppers thronged the markets in Srinagar city as well as in other towns of the Valley.”
Police said that continuing its drive against the miscreants, they arrested 67 such individuals during past 24 hours involved in different offences of causing disturbance in several parts of the Valley in the recent past.
Four people including a policeman were booked under contentious Public Safety Act (PSA) and shifted to Kathua Jail while four minors were lodged in Juvenile Jail.
Police last night conducted raids in Karimabad in Pulwama district arresting eight people including 4 minors for their involvement in stone-pelting. One SPO working in J&K police was also arrested and booked under PSA.
The four residents of Karimabad were shifted to Kathua Jail under Public Safety Act and were identified as SPO Rafi Pandit, son of late Muhammad Abdullah; Muhammad Shafi, son of Assadullah; Muhammad Arif Dar, son of Ghulam Hasan and Umar Ishaq Bhat.
Four minors from the same village were also arrested and shifted to Juvenile Jail They are Qaisar Ahmed Kumhar, son of Abdul Qadir; Nisar Ahmed Wani, son of Abdul Rashid; Latif Ahmed Mir, son of Bashir Ahmed and Jahangir Ahmed Mir, son of Ghulam Muhammad.
Police also arrested four persons from Gadroo village of Pulwama while another youth Feroz Ahmed Bhat, son of Abdul Qadir from Sarnoo village of Pulwama was also shifted to Kathua Jail under Public Safety Act.
Authorities today imposed curfew-like restrictions in Trehgam area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district to foil a protest march.
Security forces were heavily deployed in the area and all entry and exit routes were sealed.
Curfew like restrictions were also imposed in Qaimoh area of Kulgam and Wakura Ganderbal while as clashes erupted in Hajin area of Bandipora when security forces tried to foil a protest rally.
