65 years old first time Dogri writer wins accolades

JAMMU, Feb 2:  When there is a trend to value young talent above all else, the maiden anthology of Dogri short stories, ‘Sochein Di Reel’, by 65 years old Ashok Dutta’s released at the K L Saigal Hall, here today, impressed everyone for its content as well as maturity of craft which is generally considered as hallmark of seasoned writers.
The first time writer Ashok Dutta, speaking about his foray into the world of Dogri literature, said that after retiring as a banker, he, instead of taking up income-generating occupation, decided to pursue college time passion of writing short stories in Dogri. He said that he has been able to pursue calling of his heart in spite of the problem with his right hand which made him to learn afresh to write with left hand. Ashok Dutta also read his satirical story Jagraata’ from his book which was highly appreciated by the audience for its satirical treatment of the subject.
Organized by Dogri Sanstha, the function was presided by Prof Lalit Magotra, Convener, Advisory Board for Dogri, Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, while chief guest was Arvinder Singh Aman, Additional, Secretary, J&K Cultural Academy.
Conducted by Nirmal Vinod, well known Dogri and Hindi poet, the function started with a critical review by Dr. Rattan Basotra, Assistant Editor, J&K Cultural Academy, who brought to focus the content and style of ‘Sochein Di Reel’, a collection of 14 stories on various social issues.
Chhatrapal, President, Dogri Sanstha, said that it is Sansthas mandate to encourage creative writers. Every new book in Dogri stands for a firm stride towards the enrichment of literature and promotes peace and harmony in the society, he said.
Prof Lalit Magotra, said modern Dogri literature has rich tradition of short stories by stalwarts like Madan Mohan, Narindra Khajuria, Ved Rahi, Bandhu Sharma,O P Sharma, Dr Manoj , Chhatrapal and Om Goswami.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Arvinder Singh Aman, praised the writer for his keen observation and social consciousness and its successful portrayal in his writing which is also marked by satire. The literary function was attended by leading writers, poets  and members of the civil society.
