64 arrested in Kashmir; SPO’s house torched

SRINAGAR, Sept 20: Police today arrested 64 people on charges of stone pelting and creating trouble in various parts of Kashmir while curfew in parts of Srinagar and shut down in rest of the Valley paralysed normal life for 74th day today.
Curfew remained in force in parts of Srinagar today with Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) patrolling the streets and had blocked the main roads with concertina wire and had stationed mobile bunkers at various places to prevent violence. However, in rest of the Valley there was no curfew but there were curfew like restrictions at many places.
The shops, business establishments, schools and colleges remained closed and traffic was off the roads. However, some private vehicles were plying in Civil Lines area of Srinagar. The train services between Banihal and Baramulla remained suspended since July 9. The mobile internet and pre-paid mobile services also remained suspended.
According to a spokesman of Zonal Police Headquarters, Kashmir, situation in the Valley remained under control today. “There was no curfew in the Valley except the areas under few police stations in Srinagar”, the spokesman said.
The spokesman said that increased movement of people and vehicular traffic was observed across the Valley during the day.
The spokesman said that during the past 24 hours, in its efforts to curb the activities of miscreants/ hooligans, police arrested 64 people involved in disturbing the situation by damaging civilian vehicles, stopping vehicular traffic and harassing people by placing obstructions on roads.
The spokesman said that two incidents of arson were reported from Srinagar and Shopian. In Vehil, Shopian, a residential house was set on fire while as in Srinagar at Batamaloo a bike was set on fire by miscreants.
The house belonged to Special Police Officer (SPO) Khushboo Jan (Belt 259) daughter of Manzoor Ahmad Bhat. The village had witnessed clashes between security forces and protesters yesterday.
Clashes erupted between protesters and security forces in Hajin area of Bandipora district during which scores of people were injured. The protesters pelted stones on security forces. The security forces fired teargas and resorted to aerial firing to disperse the protesters.
One protester Aqib Ahmad Wani, son of Ghulam Ahmad Wani received bullet injury and was shifted to Srinagar’s hospital for treatment. Scores of other people were also injured.
Clashes erupted in Fatehpora locality of Ganderbal district after people staged protests against the arrest of a youth, allegedly involved in stone-pelting.
Security forces fired teargas to disperse the protesters, triggering clashes.
However, no injury was reported during the clashes.
