NASA sends first robotic lander to Mars

SAN FRANCISCO: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched its first robotic Mars lander, designed to study the interior and subsurface of Mars, from Atlas 5 rocket, in the wee hours of Saturday.

Launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, at around 0405 hrs local time, the robotic lander will also explore the deep interiors of another planet, while on its voyage to Mars, reports said here.

Expected to land on the surface of Mars in November 2018, the robotic machine would help the scientists to understand the history of Earth and Solar System. It would deploy a seismometer and burrow a heat probe. It will also perform a radio science experiment to study the internal structure of Mars, said reports. (AGENCIES)
