SRINAGAR, Sept 2:  Police have started a crackdown against the persons who upload pictures and videos of militants on social networking sites and have so far arrested six persons from South Kashmir.
The pictures and videos of militants based in South Kashmir have been making rounds of social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter from nearly two months. The pictures and videos are also being circulated on messaging application ‘whatsapp’.
Following these developments, the police registered a case under FIR number 95/2015 under Sections S17, 18 and 18A Unlawful Activities Act in police station Awantipora. “The manhunt has been launched to nab these so called online Jehadi activists who have been uploading these videos and photos with the sole intention of luring the youngsters into militancy,” a police officer said.
He said the police have arrested six persons from different parts of South Kashmir so far and they are being questioned to identify other such elements. “Stern action is likely to be taken against all such elements who are luring and pushing youngsters into militancy and destroying their future,” the police said.
The police further said that they have “taken up the matter” with Facebook and whatsapp and claimed that “they are well cooperating with the law enforcement agencies in identifying such criminals who in the name of Jihad are misleading young and impressionable minds”.
The police and Army maintain that the sole aim of uploading these pictures and videos is to lure youths towards militancy. In his first ever video message, the Hizbul Mujahideen divisional commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani urged the youths to join militant ranks and support militancy “in every possible way”.
