50% tax on cinema halls, multiplexes

JAMMU, Mar 31: The Government has imposed whopping 50 per cent entertainment duty on cinema halls located in Malls and Multiplexes from tomorrow.
An order to this effect has been issued by the Government.
Official sources said the rates of entertainment duty chargeable from cinema halls allocated in Malls and Multiplexes will be 50 per cent of the amount charged for admission to entertainment per person per show from April 1, 2016.
This will result into massive jump in the tickets of cinema halls and multiplexes, causing huge burden on the cinegoers.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Cinema and Multiplex Association has submitted a memorandum to Governor NN Vohra through  Rajan Gupta urging him to withdraw the new order levying 50 per cent entertainment tax on cinema halls and multiplexes and restore the previous order of 2006.
Pointing out that cinema halls were already at the verge of extinction and some of them were even closed, Gupta said that imposition of huge tax on the cinema halls and multiplexes will deliver a crippling blow to them and the entertainment industry and force the people to curtail their entertainment.
The Association has called for tax free cinema tickets at par with neighbouring State like Punjab.
