SRINAGAR, Oct 8: Police arrested around 50 National Youth Corps (NYC) volunteers as they tried to ‘gherao’ the Assembly here today.
Dozens of NYC volunteers assembled near the Khalsa High School and raised slogans in favour of their demands. The volunteers were demanding their appointment in the department where they are working as supporting staff for the last two years. They alleged that the State Government was not paying any attention to their genuine demands.
The volunteers tried to march towards the Assembly and put forward their demands before the legislators. However, the plan was foiled by the police who didn’t allow them to move further. Some of the volunteers offered stiff resistance and following this, they were arrested and then lodged at different police stations.
The cops resorted to lathicharge on volunteers, leading to minor injuries to some of the them. The clashes between the two sides carried on for sometime.
