SRINAGAR: Five militants were reportedly killed in a fierce encounter by security forces in north Kashmir district of Bandipora, where protests erupted on Saturday afternoon.
However, police said operation by security forces at Chandergeer Hajin, Bandipora was going on when the reports last came in.
Official sources said Rahstriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation in the village following a tip-off about the presence of militants.
However, when the security forces were moving towards particular area in the village, militants opened fire with automatic weapons.
Security forces also retaliated and in the ensuing gun battle five militants were killed.
The operation continued, they said, adding that people took to streets and clashed with the security forces deployed there. Further details are awaited. (AGENCIES)
