5 militants killed as alert troops foil 2 infiltration bids in north Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Five militants were killed as alert troops foiled two separate infiltration bids since early this morning near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir.         

Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that troops guarding the LoC noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) in Balkhadiya post in Tangdhar sector in Kupwara in the wee hours under the cover of darkness.         

However, when challenged and asked to surrender, the militants opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons, he said. Col Kalia said forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter, adding a militant was killed in the initial exchange of fire.         

A massive search operation was launched to sanitize the area, he said, adding contact was again established with the militants in the evening. He said two more militants were killed in the exchange of fire. “Three weapons were recovered from the militants,” he said, adding the operation was still going on in the thick forest area in Tangdhar sector.         

Meanwhile, Col Kalia said another infiltration bid was foiled when Army intercepted a group of militants that tried to sneaking into this side from PoK in Rampur sector in Baramulla.         

He said two militants were killed in the exchange of fire. “Two weapons were recovered from the encounter site,” he said. Additional security forces were rushed to the area and a massive hunt was launched in the dense forest to nab the other militants.  (AGENCIES)
